Tree trimming (also known as pruning) is a common tree maintenance procedure. Tree trimming should be performed by someone who is knowledgeable about how a tree may react to each cut as improper pruning can damage to the tree or potentially shorten the tree's life.
Tree branches should not be removed without a reason. Common reasons for removal include removing crowded limbs, removing dead branches, removing limbs that are rubbing together, eliminating potential hazards to your property or to reduce the risk of possible injuries due to the tree limbs location. Trees may also be trimmed to allow more light and air to pass through into the tree and the ground below.
Choosing the ideal time of year for tree trimming depends on the reasons for need to prune. Most routine pruning (for example removing dead limbs, removing weak or diseased limbs) can be performed at any time of the year without having much effect on the tree.
In general, 'wound closure' is fastest if pruning is done before the spring growth season. Heavy pruning should be avoided just after the spring growth season as trees will have spent a lot of energy producing foliage and heavy trimming then can cause extra stress on the tree.
